Medieval Festival in Cesis
In Cesis, preparing to celebrate our 800-year anniversary in 2006, we take a real pride in our small town’s larger than life history. Cesis Castle, now a majestic ruin, was in medieval times the main stronghold of the Livonian knights, who ruled most of Latvia and Estonia.

But we bring the past to life: we have artisans who practice their ancient skills and who'll even let you try your hand. We have the master of the knights himself, from the 16th century, to guide you round his castle. And we bring together people from all over the Latvia for our Medieval Festival. Not to mention the beer brewing tradition since 1590 and the annual beer fest…

In year 2005 Medieval Festival in Cesis will happen on the third weekend of July. The idea of organising the festival first appeared due to the huge and increasing social interest in medieval culture of the Baltic region. The idea has achieved success - and the numbers of visitors and participants is a good evidence for that. Medieval Festival in Cesis has grown from the Festival of Knights (1999 - 2000) and from Baltic Medieval Festival (http://www.balticmedieval.info) which took place in Cesis four last years (2001 - 2004).

The organizers of the Medieval Festival in Cesis are Cesis City Council (http://www.cesis.lv/eng/?cat=3) and Cesis Municipal agency "Vidzeme History and Tourism Centre" (http://tourism.cesis.lv/index.php?kods=1800&val=en) in cooperation with Culture College of Latvia, local schoolchildren and non-professional artists and performers.

The idea of the festival is to ensure atractive and high quality historical re-enactment, therefore all the events are designed on high quality criteria, meanwhile creating a united and unique sense of true medieval festivity both for the participants and the visitors of the festival.
