The Cities
Leisnig - A town with castle romantic
Leisnig is one of five towns within district Döbeln. The history that spans more than 950 years is very alternating. Silver ware of the empire, Leisnig’s “Kastenordnung” as a result of reformation in Saxony or residence of the Polish counter king Leszczynski are distinguishing marks of the development.
200 years as a garrison town came to an end with the withdrawal of the Russian armed forces in 1993. After that, there had to be made new municipal aims for Leisnig.
The Mildenstein Castle, the 800 years old Buch Monastery and Leisnig’s old town, as a whole a monument area of national importance, is unique in Döbeln’s district. Deriving out of it Leisnig takes a cultural-historical position. The regional development plan focuses city tourism to Leisnig, beside Leipzig and Colditz. Owing to the traditions and local environment Leisnig has been rated as a place for trips since 10 years. The town aims to develop Leisnig as a relaxation place. Out of the condition of the former garrison town, the topography, the protection of historic buildings and monuments and the conservation of landscape Leisnig won’t develop to a seat of industry. However, healthy medium-sized and small enterprises are unalterable for a development to a relaxation place. Commercial branches on real estates of the former Russian armed forces and reuse of existing industrial fallow land come into line with objective targets. An excellent residential location, the romantic flair of the old town and an advantageous location between cities and a direct motorway drive are best conditions for the development. Leisure-time shaping in the region has a high relaxation value. Numerous kilometres of signposted hiking trails, an open air bath, events, sports grounds and tennis courts as well as regionally important celebrations as the Castle- and Old Town festivities, the Harvest Festival in Klosterbuch, the Bloom Celebration form surroundings of tourism.
Moreover, traditional fruit growing influences the region. All local companies are significant in the German-speaking area on account of their size and concentration of fruit growing plantations. Leisnig rightly bears the epithet “Town of Tree Bloom” This is, beside the primary economical situation shown by nearly 400 employees in fruit growing branch, also important for attractive scenery and with it a magnet for cities.
