The European Historic Enactment Network
The European Historic Enactment Network (EHRN) was founded in September 1998 in Spetses (Greece). The whole idea was conceived at the Municipal Development Enterprise of Spetses in February 1998 with the unanimous support of the Municipal Council, which granted to the corporation the entire responsibility of representing the Municipality in the activities of the Network.
In September 1998 the Municipality of Spetses invited a number of Municipalities from eight European countries aiming the foundation of the Network and the drawing up of the foundation declaration and the formation of the initial program of activities. By unanimous decision of the nine attending Municipalities the founding declaration was approved.
The declaration expresses the targets of the formation of the Network, which were:
- The preservation and promotion of the European historic heritage
- The contribution to the ideal of European integration
- The promotion of mutual understanding of the European cultures and the comprehension of their common characteristics through the development of tourism, information technology, educational and cultural exchanges.
On the basis of the above mentioned targets, the participating in the Founding Symposium Municipalities agreed that their actions should focus at:
- The establishment of a framework for a permanent form of communication and co-operation.
- The establishment of an annual action plan, which would include activities and actions that show off the institution of enactments through tourism, cultural events, publications, meetings etc., exploiting the advantages of information science in communication and information.
- The participation of the Network in the materialization of programs of the European Committee related to cultural tourism.
- The survey and participation of more European Municipalities to the Network.
In October 1998 the Municipalities of the Network met in Brussels in order to draw up the statutory and establish the process for the official and legal validation of the functions of the Network. Following the approval of the statutory, the Network proceeded to a series of promotional actions of its' activities and the strengthening of the ties between the members. In the intervening time four more Municipalities were added to the Network apart from the founding members (Brussels - Belgium and Bailen - Spain, Bourtange - Netherlands, Arezzo - Italy) etc.
Today the Network comprises 11 towns from 8 European countries. The towns are:
- Brussels - Belgium
- Bailen - Spain
- Hydra & Spetses - Greece
- Arezzo, Pisa, Tolentino - Italy
- Bourtange - Netherlands
- Cesis - Latvia
- Leisnig - Germany
- Slavkov (Austerlitz) - Czech Republic
Apart from the founding Assembly, four General Assemblies have taken place up to now. In chronological order , the Presidency of the Network has been held by Spetses (1998-99), Cork (1999-2000), Bailen (2001), Spetses (2002), Hydra (2003). The Presidency for 2004 is held by the Municipality of Arezzo (Italy). President is the Councillor of Municipality of Arezzo Mr. Gianni Cantaloni, Vice- President is Mr. Petr Kostik (Municipality of Slavkov u Brna) and the secretary is Mr. Alessandro Boncompagni (Municipality of Arezzo).
